  COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

  • DRAWING WITH MODEL:  as a 4-day intensive course (with models varying daily), Professor Ruiz provides an extensive range materials (both wet and dry) to engage and stretch each individual’s use and ability with different media.  Charcoals, inks, bamboo pens, homemade pastels, conte, lead pencils are some of the materials to be introduced along with an assortment of prepared papers.  Professor Ruiz organizes excellent exercise for established artists seeking alternative explorations with materials as well as for the new artists who want to explore an array of materials and develop their own vocabulary. This is offered only as an intensive group course. Please check schedule.
  • PAINTING: TECHNIQUES & MATERIALS:  an intensive 4-day study of the making and combining of basic media (acrylics, oils, pastels, mixed media & encaustic) and their use and support in painting. Workshop will focus on the materials and methods used in painting. Students are also encouraged to explore and experiment. Materials not included.  Painting courses are offered for groups or individuals.
  • ETCHING: BASIC & EXPERIMENTAL:  the four day course works with individuals and their specific interests and needs in etching.   Professor Ruiz demonstrates different techniques such as dry-point, aguafuerte, agua tinta and mezzotint preparations. Metal plates (zinc, copper and iron) are available along with the tools for drawing, acids, solvents, varnishes, grounds, inks, additives and proof paper.  This course can include the making of monoprints using plexi-glass plates, paints, inks, stencils and collage materials and as well as embossing, mixographs, collagraphs, Cliche-Verre (Glass Print) and etching on linoleum or wood.  Etching courses are offered for groups or individuals.
  • MATERIALS: MAKING YOUR OWN:  a one-day workshop on the making of paints such pastels, oils and acrylics as well as drawing tools.   By learning to make paints helps the artist become better equipped to mix colors, achieve the right color blend and gain a preferred texture.
  • ENCAUSTIC: This course includes the preparation of hot wax painting, the supports and techniques in working with colors and wax.  Encaustic painting involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface — usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.  Encaustic courses are offered for groups or individuals.
